How to create the right mood in your bedroom

Your bedroom is your own personal space that not many other people will see so it’s the perfect place for you to really inject some of your own personality.

Find artwork that you love – lean it against a wall – you can even create your own artwork (if it goes wrong just have another go!) Big mirrors are a good way to give a sense of space. Again, lean them against the wall for impact – also allowing you to check your outfit one more time before you leave.

Using a feature wallpaper or painting a wall/s (usually the wall behind the bed is used as a feature wall) can greatly add to the impact of your bedroom. I wallpapered a wall and ceiling in the same paper for a client recently (textured light gold paper) and it looked fabulous! Textured walls are a current trend, as is using wood behind the bed to give a Scandi, earthy look. Lighter colours will certainly help to open up a space and choosing a low bed and furniture can also help to keep your room looking less cluttered and ultimately more spacious. But don’t be afraid to use darker colours as they can add mood and used correctly, they won’t make your room feel small, despite what we all might think!

The last couple of years have seen more maximalist interior trends come to the fore with bold, eccentric and dramatic mixing of patterns, layering and grouping and incorporating wild floral and abstract prints and highly patterned curtains, artwork and accessories. If you do go down the bold route, and especially if you have a smaller room – less is more. A headboard is a good way of making a statement – go opulent with leather, velvet or chenille – a headboard has a purpose too and if you’re a reader like me, it’s comfy against your head!

Most of us need more storage space so think carefully about how and what you want to store. Fitted or free-standing wardrobes are a personal preference so it’s up to you which you prefer – don’t forget about useful storage in a bedside cabinet and an ottoman at the foot of the bed is great for bedding.

Lighting and flooring will bring your scheme to life and you can be quite dramatic in the bedroom. Smart home technology can allow you to adjust the brightness and colour of your lighting to match your mood. Statement lighting is also an important part of bedroom – why not make the lighting the statement piece of your bedroom? Choose a sumptuous carpet that feels lovely underfoot.

Don’t forget about the accessories as these are the easiest and cheapest way to quickly change the look of any room. Wool blankets, textured throws, cushions, pillows and soft cosy rugs offer comfort and warmth and help you to relax and fall asleep (my other half loves having to remove a few cushions to be able to get into bed!)
